Assassin's Creed Odyssey (2018) Game Review

Short Version

With more than 100 hours of gameplay in the magical ambient of the greek world, with the massive map size, and of course, the intriguing gameplay, Odyssey is one of the best Assassin's Creed titles.

Long Version

Graphics : Assassin's Creed Odyssey is thriving with it's graphics. Considering the graphical madness was Ubisoft's core of pitch for the game, that's not really unexpected. The game is looking great in any way. Details are really smooth, colors are really vibrant, image quality is all together top-notch. There's not much difference I experienced om higher tier set graphics, the game sets texture on high even if you're on ultra and it keeps the shadow highest. I would suggest, if you get the game and assuming your PC can hold it, setting up the graphics so that shadow is on high+, and texture is on very high+. That will be a much better experience trust me. Graphics overall passes ✔

Gameplay : The game follows the new AC ark when it comes to mechanics. Easy to learn, easier to master. Leveling is has never been easier in this franchise. Controls are quite easy to get, while understanding the difference between jumping and running is a perk hard to get. Stealth is really good. Although I am totally a fan of the old stealth mechanics, I must say the new games do things differently and it works just as well. Combat is pretty straight forward. There are some really easy exploit-likes you can master. Ghost Of Artemis (name might be wrong) ability lets you shoot through walls. Combined with other perks such as crit modifier, attack speed modifier, damage modifier and others, that real quickly becomes a godlike ability. Still, you can always change the difficulity, so that's no issue as well really. Gameplay passes with little tweaks ✔

Open World : The game offers a massive, and that's not just wording, actually massive open world. So much so that you probably can't and most likely won't see more than 3/4 of this world even with a decent, steady pace. That might sound good, but considering the game offers time limited quests, and bulletin quests, not knowing every possible quest seems a bit itchy to me. You probably won't even know the existance of some really cool mini-puzzles, some really great looking islands, some great Tales Of Greece quests. Plus, some islands are not needed to complete the game, which will cause you to never visit them, that's not really good news. As I said, it sounds good, but I would prefer either a little bit smaller open world, or something valuable to do in those islands you never need to visit. If you put it, get it in play I'd say. Open world, because it's too-too good, fails ➖

Sound : Original soundtracks are really, really, really good. The default sound levels are ideal and not so loud like the previous one. Character lines, dialogues are holding up OK (excluding the DLCs here) Sound effects however, are a mess. You will come across sounds that you will not determine, sounds that you will not know what to do with, sounds that irritate you. There are some sound related bugs that occur, mostly during your newgame+ but we will rule those out for this review, for now. Sound is a tied feature, but considering the effort, we will count it as passed ✔

Replayibility : I have to say quite limited. A new game+ mode exists, which is unlocked right after you beat the story with any ending. After that, you can start over, keeping your abilities, inventory, crew and etc. The problem is that it doesn't really satisfy. At least in my case, I wasn't convinced to play it all over again really. The world is really massive and there's a lot, I mean a lot, of quests. Which gets you bored after some time. So even though the new game+ is fun and all at first; it's not really after a short period of time. Replay value is not enough to pass ➖

Photo Mode : The game offers a decent, optimized photo mode. There's no day/light tool, there's no tool to hide your chacter. However, you can adjust depth, color models and color related quite easily. Frames are really good, I liked the frames a lot. Try the frames. Photo mode passes ✔

In the end, our results will look like this :

Graphics : ✔  Gameplay : ✔  Open World : ➖  Sound : ✔  Replayibility : ➖  Photo Mode : ✔

Verdict

Odyssey is one of the best Assassin's Creed titles I've played (I played them all) It's innovative, it's always refreshing, it's fun, it's really long (in a good way, in a witcher way) Overall, the game is a real time killer and I loved every little detail about it. Even though it has it's cons, it's must play, if you ask my humble opinion.
